Royal Winton/James Kent/House of Claridge Reproductions:
(Webmaster's note: New Chintz items are being added regularly. It will be difficult to keep this list up-to-date.)

Life in the pottery district in England has been hard these past years, and with the rise in the British pound and the fall of the yen, unemployment has been at an all-time high. It is ironic that chintz – such a good seller in the Depression of the 1930s – should once again come to the rescue of several faltering ceramics manufacturers. Chintz has been so popular, and the prices have been so strong, that it has once again become economic for factories to start producing chintz ware. The Managing director of Royal Winton told me that they had hired back several women who had worked on their chintz lines in the past. It is important, however, for the new collector to be aware of what has been produced in the last year or two since chintz went back into production. I have heard from several new collectors who bought pieces from the Royal Winton giftware range of "Florence" and "Summertime" thinking they were buying old chintz. Similarly at a recent antique show here in Canada, I saw people making the same mistake with reproduction James Kent "Hydrangea".

If you are buying what you think is a limited edition with a view to future profits, please check the size of the edition. The "Welbeck" teapot sold out within days of the July issue of Victoria hitting the newsstands, and phone callers were told that a second 1000 would be produced. In the end, according to Michael Southall, Sales Manager of Royal Winton, more than 10,000 were ordered.

As well as their limited edition items, Royal Winton have brought out a whole range of giftwares in "Summertime", "Florence" and "Welbeck". The House of Claridge has brought out 5 piece place settings in "Summertime" and "Welbeck" as well as teasets including teapot cream and sugar, 8-inch dessert plate, cup and saucer and a three tiered cake stand. James Kent produced a whole range of objects in "Du Barry" and "Hydrangea", as well as a new pattern named "Lydia", and there are rumors of "Apple Blossom" to follow. The Old Chintz Company have bought the Lord Nelson backstamp so there may be Lord Nelson reproductions in the near future.

There was a recent advertisement in Victoria Magazine for a Stratford "Athena" shape teapot.  I would be most interested to see one (especially the backstamp) if any of you ordered one and have taken delivery.
